36 hour concrete pour carried out at One Nine Elms project

The first of three raft slab pours on the One Nine Elms project, the River Tower slab is one of the largest continuous concrete pours ever undertaken in Central London. The slab measures 4.7 metres at its deepest point and contains a total concrete volume of 4,860 cubic metres.

To pump this large volume of concrete, our substructure subcontractor Careys used four static line pumps serviced by three project gates, with two back-up pumps on standby during the pour. The concrete was supplied by London Concrete who provided 656 concrete wagons from their Battersea and Bow batching plants over the 36 hour period.  

The Multiplex team undertook extensive stakeholder engagement with local authorities and statutory bodies to coordinate how the concrete wagons were staged in designated areas prior to entering the site, minimising the impact to the local transport network in this busy part of Central London. We also maintained close communication with local residents through weekly updates in the four weeks leading up to the pour to keep them informed of the extended working hours. The pour was successfully completed without a single health and safety incident.  

Multiplex is delivering One Nine Elms for R&F Properties as a major part of the redevelopment of the wider Nine Elms area on the south bank of the Thames. It features two towers – the 42-storey River Tower and the 57-storey City Tower – which are soon to become two of Europe's tallest residential skyscrapers. The first 18 storeys of the River Tower will also house a five-star hotel – including a ballroom, restaurant and luxury spa – while the City Tower will feature a sky garden and a residents' lounge on the fiftieth floor with spectacular views over London.
