Multiplex Positive Impact report highlights vision of higher sustainability performance in construction

The report covers Multiplex's European operations, which in 2018 employed 920 people across 19 projects and accounted for a supply chain spend of £800 million. It details Multiplex's progress and achievements over the last 12 months in the context of its core business principle, Positive Impact, which was also launched in 2018. This marks a shift in focus from harm reduction to the 'net positive' concept of creating positive impacts – for people, the environment and the communities where they operate.

Dr Eva Gkenakou, Sustainability Director at Multiplex, said:

"Positive Impact reflects the sense of purpose throughout Multiplex to focus on areas where we can make the greatest impacts. We are responsible for some of the largest, most complex and advanced structures in the world, so we understand the need for greater engagement across stakeholder groups and are ambitious to lead on science-based, evidence-backed, cultural and behavioural change."

The Positive Impact report breaks down how Multiplex is working to address macro challenges and the different forces shaping the world today. Highlights include:

Environmental Emergency:

• Becoming one of 178 companies worldwide to set their carbon emissions reduction targets in line with climate science as part of the Science Based Targets initiative, a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)
• 100% of Multiplex projects achieving their environmental assessment standards, including six BREEAM 'Excellent' ratings
• Joining an exclusive group of businesses by becoming an Investor in Wildlife with the London Wildlife Trust
• Avoiding the creation of more than 3,500 tonnes CO2e by switching to green tariffs
• Over 200,000 cubic metres of waste being diverted from landfill – enough to fill Centre Court at Wimbledon two and a half times over.

People and Wellbeing:

• Continuing their industry-leading efforts to combat modern slavery by signing the Gangmasters & Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) Construction Protocol, a joint agreement between major construction companies
• Launching Aspire – a state-of-the art professional management development programme
• Creating a complete network of trained Mental Health First Aiders – one for every Multiplex project and office across the UK
• Becoming an active sponsor of Women Into Construction nationwide

Social Value and Community:

• Targeting a local employment rate of 20% and achieving a rate of 57% living within 15 miles of our sites
• Targeting 56 educational engagements and achieving 105
• 100% of projects achieving a score of 9/10 in the Considerate Constructors Scheme

Trust and Ethics:

• Launching a global Human Rights committee and a regional Modern Slavery Committee
• Commissioning, and then delivering against, a third party Diversity and Inclusion Audit
• Co-drafting the global Building Responsibly Principles for worker rights and welfare which have now been adopted by six construction companies and 20 oil and gas companies

Digital and Data:

• Launching a Big Data programme – bringing accurate data together for programme teams in real time and reducing reporting time by 60%
• Launching a Digital Construction programme, which aims to provide the strongest possible foundation for digital innovation
• Committing to all new projects being delivered as full digital construction projects
