A conversion of the historical and heritage building into a viable hotel complex

The successful landmark $13 million heritage conversion of the former Adelaide Treasury building on the corner of King William and Flinders Streets in Adelaide's CBD into a 5-star 80-room hotel.

Multiplex was meticulous in its approach at restoring, refurbishing and converting the heritage building into a modern luxury hotel and collaborated with developer the Toga Group and key stakeholders to provide planning, development and consent solutions for the project.

The site presented many challenges beyond those associated with constructing heritage conversions. The Adelaide Treasury site comprises seven individual buildings with a combined area of 8,000 square metres over four levels. The buildings are inter-connected and together they frame a large open-air central courtyard. Multiplex developed a detailed timeline and developed each building separately using different construction techniques, customised to the individual requirements of each building.

The architectural specifications for the Medina Grand were extremely detailed and were carefully implemented in the refurbishment and restoration by Multiplex. Works were completed in just over a year and included the conversion of the building into hotel accommodation, constructing a full-sized indoor heated swimming pool and refurbishing the historic Cabinet Room, central courtyard and basement tunnels.

The Medina Grand is testimony to Multiplex's credentials in both the heritage and hotel sectors and also highlights the success of its collaborative approach and ability to effectively work closely with a range of stakeholders.
