Delivering a leading hospital

Multiplex was responsible for the design and construction of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital & The Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.

The £575 million publicly-funded development gives Glasgow one of the most advanced adult acute hospitals in the UK and the largest critical care complex in Scotland. It is the keystone facility within the Scottish Health Modernisation Strategy, which aims to lead the way in contemporary healthcare provision.

Multiplex delivered this new state-of-the-art healthcare facility and high quality design environment five weeks ahead of schedule and under budget. Built on the site of the existing Southern General Hospital in the south west of Glasgow, the project comprises a new acute care hospital with 1,109 beds in single-room accommodation, 256-bed children’s hospital, 30 modern operating theatres and a separate laboratory block providing biochemistry, haematology and blood transfusion services and a stand-alone energy centre.

An estimated 750,000 patient episodes (including 110,000 A&E patients) are expected at the hospital every year. It is home to major specialised services such as renal medicine, transplantation and vascular surgery.

A key element of the Multiplex commitment to delivery of this project was to link the opportunities presented by the development into the needs of the local community. Multiplex achieved considerable client and industry recognition for our efforts in this area. As part of the project we exceeded our obligations by supporting local businesses and providing 440 new entrant jobs, 210 work experience placements and raised in excess of £400,000 for local charities and good causes.
