Multiplex releases its 2022 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Strategy for Canada

TORONTO, CANADA: Premier construction company Multiplex Construction Canada Ltd. (Multiplex) has launched its strategy for environmental, social and governance (ESG) in 2022.

The newly released strategy underpins the global business’ purpose to construct a better future. With the strategy as a roadmap, and by working with industry partners, Multiplex aims to create lasting change and a thriving future for its project communities and the environment.“Under each of the ESG pillars are our focus areas and specific actions Multiplex is taking to advance our environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals and commitments,” said Multiplex Sustainability Manager, Anya Barkan.

“One 2022 focus area is community engagement and adding social value to the communities we build within. Through open communication and active participation in the community throughout the lifecycle of our projects we, and our clients, strive to have a lasting positive impact on people’s lives.”

Multiplex recognizes the unique opportunity it has to influence upstream to clients and downstream to trades, and the positive impact its projects can have when ESG objectives align.

In 2021, the Canadian business became the first construction company in Canada to have its science-based greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reduction target approved by the respected Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The target – to reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 63% by 2035 from a 2020 base year – is in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

Through ongoing collaboration with project partners, the firm continues to monitor data coming from all streams under the science-based target umbrella and is making steady progress towards its ambitious reduction target.

As part of its ‘Model First’ approach to construction – building a project virtually before breaking ground – Multiplex is trialing the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology to forecast the embodied carbon footprint of its projects.

Gathering carbon data enables Multiplex to assess the embodied carbon reduction potential of its construction projects and equip their clients with the facts to make impactful decisions when it comes to design and material selection.

“Data collection and analysis is key to our decarbonization roadmap and embedding ESG in everything we do at Multiplex,” Ms. Barkan said.
