A glamorous re-imagining of a Grade II listed building in London’s prestigious Mayfair

The 30 Grosvenor Square development honours the heritage of the iconic former American Embassy building, retaining the original external façade and incorporating a new hotel, retail, and event space within. Situated in the heart of Mayfair’s conservation area in the City of Westminster, the 46,342m2 project also features significant public realm improvements.

Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, The Chancery Rosewood hotel at 30 Grosvenor Square revives this iconic central London building; the former American Embassy and only UK project of architect Eero Saarinen. The new design restores the relationship between structure and location, creating an inner-city destination which boasts five restaurants, six flagship retail units, 139 luxury hotel rooms, a spa, and ballroom with capacity for 1,000 guests.

The redesign of the public realm promotes an active street front, with the removal of security barriers and defensive infrastructure increasing accessibility. The new build sections are being carefully constructed around existing elements, creating a sense of continuity and connection with the surrounding square.

Following extensive demolition and enabling works, Multiplex are responsible for delivering the multi storey basement, concrete frame and high quality façades, incorporating new elevations and delivering premium interior finishes. The constrained nature of the site requires an intricate set of temporary works and monitoring stations, as well as two large luffing jib tower cranes. Construction is also limited to certain working hours and noise and vibration limits, due to the central location. Multiplex are proud to have achieved a Considerate Constructors Scheme rating of 48 at 30 Grosvenor Square, which shows our commitment to our neighbours, an integral component of all our project planning. This awareness extends to the conscious construction methods we employ, such as our Zero emissions transport launch, targeting Zero on site plant emissions by 2025 and Zero site delivery emissions by 2030.

The holistic restoration of 30 Grosvenor Square enables dialogue between interior and exterior, and creates an open, welcoming environment which compliments the urban landscape.
