Europe Science Based Target (1.5 degree realignment)
We have further stepped up our carbon ambitions by aligning with the newest thinking in climate science.
In February 2019, we became one of the first contractors in the UK to have our carbon targets approved by the prestigious Science Based Targets initiative. Our targets were previously aligned with limiting global temperature rise to 2C by 2050, however, we have now increased our ambition by setting targets in line with limiting temperature rise to 1.5C by 2050.
We are targeting 55% reduction in direct emissions by 2030. In addition, 95% of our suppliers will set a science-based target by 2023.
We have already accelerated progress against our targets through the transition to 100% renewable electricity tariffs. In 2018, we switched 3 million kWh of electricity to renewable sources, saving 600 tonnes of carbon. This is equivalent to the carbon footprint of 70 UK households. This means by the end of 2025, we will have avoided 19,300 tonnes of carbon being emitted to the atmosphere.
To achieve our supply chain target, we are working closely with our clients, design teams and supply chain to optimise the use of low-carbon construction materials and processes, and help deliver buildings that operate at low energy, carbon and cost.
Multiplex is built for positive impact and these latest targets are a testament to our commitment to tackling climate change.
