Multiplex offers pupils a unique learning experience in Glasgow

The six schools that participated in the programme were Bellahouston Academy, Govan High School, St Paul's High School, Hillpark High School, Enhanced Vocational Inclusion Programme and Lourdes Secondary School.

In conjunction with Glasgow City Council Vocational Education Department, the schools have participated in the project and have undertaken research in areas relating to Health and Safety, Design, Construction, Regeneration, Career Opportunities and Business Development. Around 50 young people have been involved with the Independent Learning Programme since January 2012 and the project reached completion with final presentations at an event in Glasgow on Friday 20th April.

A judging panel made up of representatives from Strathclyde University, Chartered Industry of Building, UCATT, Hoskins Architects and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde scored the presentation and the winning school team, Bellahouston Academy were awarded with the Multiplex Challenge Cup. All teams were awarded Certificates of Achievement.

Project Director for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said, "As part of the construction of the New South Glasgow Hospitals it is crucial to the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde that the community has a real stake in the project. From the outset we have been focused on creating real benefits to the people of the south west Glasgow and I"m delighted with the results to date.  The Independent Learning Programme is a key initiative being undertaken by Multiplex Europe as part of their on-going community benefit commitments and it gives young people a better understanding of the construction process, showcases the size and scale of the project and provides the young people with a positive personal development experience."

Maureen Baird, Vocational Education Manager for Glasgow City Council stated, "This has been a great opportunity for our young people and Vocational Education department are delighted to have supported Multiplex deliver this prestigious programme. This is partnership working at its very best. Getting industry involved with young people from an early age adds real value to their school learning and gives them a real chance to make an informed assessment on their chosen career route."

Project Director for Multiplex Europe commented, "This is a fantastic project and I'm delighted to see so many young people getting involved. All the groups were allocated mentors from the team at the New South Glasgow Hospital and many of the students have been to the project site for a visit. Getting the community involved in the construction process at the New South Glasgow Hospital is something we are extremely enthusiastic about and the team are working very hard to make sure that we are linking the opportunities presented by this massive project to the needs of the local community by creating jobs, business and learning opportunities."

Following the Independent Learning Programme the pupils will be offered the chance to attend an employability workshop run by Glasgow's Regeneration Agency at the New South Glasgow Hospital project site Training and Recruitment Centre.
