Shellharbour Connectivity Centre

With youth unemployment in the Shellharbour area one of the highest in New South Wales at 39.9%, Multiplex utilised the redevelopment of Shellharbour Shopping Centre as a vehicle to create positive change for the local community.

Multiplex partnered with The Salvation Army Employment Plus (TSAEP) and client Stockland to develop the Connectivity Centre, an innovative space to support employment of local people on the site.

Run by TSAEP staff, the Connectivity Centre is a great example of collaboration. Stockland provided a rent-free prime retail space within the shopping centre, while site sub-contractors donated the fit-out. Multiplex also provided a training facility within the construction site to support on-the-job training.

In the first three years, the Connectivity Centre has helped to place a total of 343 local people in employment. This includes 50 placed in construction positions, 50 in retail positions, 11 in other community roles brokered by TSAEP and 11 in roles made available through the Federal Government’s Retail Plus program. In addition, 224 job-seekers found their own employment with support from the TSAEP.

In 2012, Multiplex was recognised for its commitment to reducing unemployment, receiving the inaugural Hall of Fame Award from the National Employment Services Association (NESA).
