Enabling a home for innovation
The Advanced Research Centre (ARC) provides the University, for the first time, with a space devoted to nurturing interdisciplinary thematic research "at scale"- crossing traditional boundaries and established ways of working. It is unique in providing access to researchers in all disciplines with the opportunity to escape from the silos that currently constrain such collaborations and help the University of Glasgow to address existing and future problems in new and imaginative ways of working.
The ARC building will be home to an 'Innovation Accelerator' space. This supported environment provides high quality office and laboratory facilities for spin-out companies, entrepreneurs and the co-location of corporate research and development teams to work with wider university programmes.
The first four levels of the structure is comprised of laboratories. There is an atrium with a large glazed roof light and glazed partitions offering views into the laboratory spaces.
Research in the ARC will be focused around five thematic areas:
- Technology for Life
- Digital Chemistry
- Quantum and Nano Technologies
- International Development
- Creative Economies and Cultural Transformation
"To solve today's greatest challenges, universities must incorporate their local communities, nurture ties with industry to foster research and innovation, and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among students and faculty from diverse backgrounds. The Advanced Research Centre accomplishes these goals by combining informed design with the latest insights into problem-solving and teamwork."
