Transforming the University's student life with innovative teaching and learning spaces
Murdoch University's Boola Katitjin is the first and largest mass engineered timber building in WA and one of Australia's most significant examples of low-carbon construction on a university campus.
Designed to accommodate up to 60 per cent of the University's teaching requirements, the multi-storey educational building brings together flexible learning environments, collaborative spaces and sustainable design principles.
The 180-metre-long structure was constructed using approximately 1,800 pieces of mass engineered timber, including some of the largest timber beams installed in Australia, with spans reaching 26 metres and weights exceeding 7,000 kilograms. Through innovative engineering and sustainable material selection, Boola Katitjin demonstrates how large-scale educational facilities can reduce environmental impact while enhancing the student learning experience.
