A uniquely designed refurbishment of the existing stadium

Multiplex’s redevelopment of the existing Suncorp Stadium saw a new more functional sports facility introduced to Queensland.

Multiplex, as a partner in a joint venture, undertook the redevelopment of this Brisbane landmark which included the construction of a new arena and the refurbishment and integration of the current Western Stand.

The infrastructure commitments comprised new roads, bridges and walkways to link the new stadium to the CBD and Roma St Station. Landscaping and associated works accounted for the beautification of the site.

Uniquely designed, Suncorp Stadium allows spectators to be only six metres from the sideline and 55 metres at the furthest point. As a result, the Stadium creates an intimate atmosphere where the spectators are as close to the action as possible.

The project involved extensive community liaison and management and consideration of ecologically sustainable design.

The stadium was designed and built with a long-term view of its users, the area’s residents, its impact on the environment and ongoing maintenance.

Features that contributed to an ecologically sustainable design include: fully enclosed sports lighting to minimise spill into the surrounding areas and neighbourhood; water from the roof stored in two large tanks and used for pitch irrigation; and natural light being introduced into the building through large glass walls at each corner of the building.

Multiplex’s project success was recognised with numerous awards: excellence in construction training, project of the year, sports facility over $10 million and accolades for professionalism and dedication to infrastructure.
