Waterfront fish market delivered on a constrained harbour

The new Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay, Sydney, is a large-scale seafood, retail, dining and public waterfront destination.

The project accommodated the operational requirements of one of the largest fish markets in the southern hemisphere while improving public access to the harbour and supporting long-term precinct activation.

The project was constructed within a constrained waterfront environment that demanded detailed logistics planning, coordination and sequencing. Key technical achievements included the delivery of a hydrostatic basement and cofferdam to facilitate complex below-water construction works. A substantial mass timber structure formed a defining feature of the development, requiring careful integration with structural and building systems across multiple work fronts.

The completed facility strengthened critical market infrastructure and provided enhanced amenities for industry participants, visitors and the wider community. The use of mass timber supported lower embodied carbon outcomes, while the engineering and construction solutions adopted across the project addressed the challenges of building on a restricted harbour-edge site. The redevelopment established a modern, enduring asset that supported both commercial operations and public engagement with Sydney Harbour.
