A modern transport facility for Perth
The project has delivered Perth commuters one of the world’s most modern and sophisticated bus stations. By moving operations underground, it has also allowed the key thoroughfares of King and Queen streets to reconnect Perth to Northbridge for the first time in over a century.
Perth Busport has replaced the ageing Wellington Street Bus Station with an Australian-first, dynamic stand-allocation underground bus station.
Multiplex completed a range of works to deliver the project, including demolition of railway platforms, excavation of 65,000 cubic metres of earth and the installation of 92 large columns which extend more than 30 metres into the ground.
With the site adjacent to an existing rail tunnel, construction staging was critical. A top-down construction technique was identified as the most efficient methodology for the project, which involved completing the construction above the underground station ahead of commencing construction underneath.
The completed Busport is 210 metres in length and has capacity to service 200 bus arrivals an hour. The project was delivered under an Alliance model, comprising the PTA, Multiplex and BG&E. Construction commenced in January 2014 and the project was successfully delivered on time in June 2016.
