Multiplex delivers new $153m facility at Royal North Shore Hospital

Whilst patients have been steadily transitioned across to the new facility over the past 2 weeks, the new building will be officially opened on 12th December by Minister for Health Jillian Skinner and Minister for Mental Health Jai Rowell.

Bound by Westbourne Street, Herbert Street, Red Road and Kolling Lane in St Leonards, the Clinical Services Building connects with the Hospital's other existing infrastructure and services and is directly linked to the adjacent, new Acute Services Building via a raised walkway. It aims to provide patient-focused care and encourage both innovation and efficiency of healthcare services.

With a striking design by Building Studio Architects and Woods Bagot, the eight level building comprises 29,000 square metres and has been designed to incorporate new technologies in a flexible form to ensure that emerging trends in clinical practice and care models can be easily incorporated into the building.

The Clinical Services Building houses women's health ambulatory care, a 40-bed maternity inpatient unit with nine birthing suites and a 32-cot neonatal intensive care unit, a severe burns unit with a dedicated operating theatre, a 24-bed paediatric inpatient unit, a general 60-bed inpatient unit comprising private rooms and two-bed rooms, a state-of-the-art musculoskeletal ward and a new 32-bed mental health unit that includes a 12-bed high dependency facility.

"The successful delivery of the Clinical Services Building several weeks ahead of schedule reflects Multiplex's strong credentials in the health sector and also its ability to manage construction within the live, working environment of a busy major hospital, with minimal disruption to everyday services," said Mr David Ghannoum, Regional Managing Director of New South Wales at Multiplex.

Construction commenced in June, 2013 and spanned 16 months. During its peak construction period, the project created 2,200 jobs.

Multiplex has a solid reputation in delivering world class medical facilities around Australia including the recently completed, award-winning, $2 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth.

It is also currently working with Health Infrastructure NSW on construction of the new South East Regional Hospital in Bega and Byron Bay Central Hospital and has previously completed several other hospital projects in New South Wales including the redevelopment of the Campbelltown and Auburn Hospitals, as well as the existing Douglas Building for Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Emergency Medicine at the Royal North Shore Hospital.
