Advanced laboratories and cleanroom facility

Moderna Technology Centre in Melbourne is Australia’s first large-scale mRNA vaccine manufacturing facility.

The project comprised advanced laboratories, pharmaceutical production areas, cleanroom environments and supporting technical infrastructure required for vaccine manufacture, research and development activities. The facility strengthened sovereign manufacturing capability and expanded local capacity for the production of mRNA-based medicines.

Delivery required the integration of highly specialised laboratory and manufacturing environments within a complex operational facility. Construction involved the installation of stringent cleanroom systems, technical services and controlled environments to support pharmaceutical manufacturing requirements. Detailed coordination of building services, specialist equipment interfaces and quality-controlled construction processes were critical to achieving the project’s operational objectives.

The completed facility enhanced Australia’s biotechnology and advanced manufacturing capability while supporting future medical research and vaccine production. Purpose-built laboratories and regulated cleanroom environments provided the infrastructure required for long-term pharmaceutical manufacturing outcomes. The project established an important piece of health infrastructure and contributed to strengthening domestic resilience in advanced therapeutics production.
