From Solar Power to Social Impact: Inside Multiplex UK's 2024 ESG Strategy and Performance Review
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Multiplex UK is pleased to announce its 2024 ESG Strategy and Performance Review, building on the foundations laid through One Decade to Act and Leave No One Behind, and setting out a clear path to deepen the business’s impact across environmental, social, and governance domains.
The annual report demonstrates how ESG principles are embedded into every facet of the organisation’s operations - from corporate offices to project sites - through to driving performance. As people remain a top priority, Multiplex continues to construct a better future - one that is sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.
Maria Fernandez Cachafeiro, Head of Sustainability, said “This report is more than a summary of our performance; it's a reaffirmation of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement. As we navigate an increasingly complex ESG landscape, it’s vital that we not only measure our impact but also share our journey openly. By reflecting on our progress to date and setting clear KPIs for the next five years, we are equipping ourselves and our stakeholders with the insight needed to drive positive impacts across our projects, our people, and communities”.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Building with Impact: 2024 marked a significant milestone with a 95% reduction in carbon emissions, driven by the One Decade to Act strategy. Over the course of the year, Multiplex achieved a 25.7% decrease in white diesel and natural gas consumption, while expanding the use of renewable energy across sites, from 79% in 2023 to 96% in 2024.
Diversity and Inclusion: Maintaining an inclusive work environment for all genders and ethnicities remains a core priority. Multiplex welcomed a near 50-50 split of incoming graduates and launched its first UK Ethnicity Network.
Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability: Multiplex is the first and only contractor in the UK with its own solar farm and, from 1 April 2025, five major construction projects it is delivering in Central London - including New Zealand House, One Exchange Square, Opus at Bankside Yards, Holborn Viaduct, and 50 Fenchurch - are being powered by green energy offset under a Power Purchase Agreement.
People-First: Multiplex have chosen to lead by example and ban the use of artificial stone across all new projects. The initiative forms part of a wider silica impact reduction programme, aimed at improving worker health and protection under the business’s Wellbeing pillar.
