Multiplex Canada's ambitious science-based GHG emissions reduction target receives approval

Multiplex becomes the first construction company in Canada to have its science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction target approved.

TORONTO, CANADA: In an industry first, Multiplex Construction Canada Ltd.’s (Multiplex) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Multiplex’s reduction target of 63% by 2035 exceeds the minimum ambition to limit global warming to 1.5°C, and has been commended by the SBTi Steering Committee.

Multiplex committed to setting a carbon reduction target in 2019, and today we are immensely proud to announce the approval of our ambitious target and join more than 1300 pioneering companies around the world in the transition to zero-carbon,” President and Managing Director for Multiplex Canada, Terry Olynyk said.

In November 2019, the Canadian business became the first construction company in Canada – and the tenth from any sector – to commit to the SBTi. Using the target as a roadmap, Multiplex will now strive toward decarbonizing its local operations in line with the latest climate science.

Canada is the third Multiplex region to join the SBTi's 'Companies Taking Action' list. Its European and Middle Eastern operations have committed targets and are taking science-based action.

The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It forms one of the commitments of We Mean Business, a global non-profit coalition working with the world's most influential businesses to take action on climate change.
