Multiplex Appointed to New Landmark Sydney Data Centre

NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA: Premier construction company Multiplex has been appointed by NEXTDC to deliver stage 1 of the S3 data centre located in Artarmon on Sydney’s lower North Shore.

This appointment follows Multiplex’s successful delivery of NEXTDC’s new generation of high-rise hyperscale data centres; including P2 Perth, a 20MW facility in Perth’s CBD, and the high quality completion of S2 Sydney, a 30MW facility in Macquarie Park which achieved full fit-out in July 2020.

Prominently located at 2 Broadcast Way, NEXTDC’s new S3 data centre will see a gross floor area of ~34,000 square metres over eight storeys and deliver more than 20,000 square metres of IT space. This will comprise of approximately 26,770 square metres of data halls and ancillary infrastructure.  

Designed by architects Greenbox, the project will also include a range of amenities for tenants including comfortable workspaces, collaboration zones, car parking and over ~4,000 square metres of critical office space.

S3 Sydney is the third and largest NEXTDC data centre in Sydney and will directly interconnect to the existing S1 and S2 Sydney data centres.

Construction has commenced and the facility will be fully operational in H2 FY22

Targeting the same 5-Star rating for energy efficiency as NEXTDC’s existing facilities, S3 will be designed and constructed to Uptime Tier IV standards. Tier IV certification recognises the facility’s complete fault tolerance and emphasises the exemplary levels of reliability and resilience, providing the maximum amount of redundancy for power and cooling.

NEXTDC are a market leader in terms of their sustainable best practises; as such, S3 will champion a range of ESD features including a reduced energy consumption cooling system. While cooling within the building is vital to its operation, the facility will incorporate ‘free cooling’ to further reduce power consumption and optimise efficiency levels.

Interestingly, the structure is predominantly a ‘hybrid’ scheme using a combination of reinforced and post-tensioned concrete and structural steel for lateral support due to its higher load capacities in dealing with heavy plant and equipment.

In July 2020, Multiplex completed the build of NEXTDC’s P2 Perth high-rise data centre (Stage 1) which saw the facility constructed on-time, and in a record time of 18 months. Delivering six levels of data halls and two levels of electrical infrastructure, P2 provides 10,000 square meters of technical space and 20 Megawatts of power to the West Australian economy.
