Multiplex, a leading global contractor, has delivered Walker Corporation’s $300 million Tower Two at the landmark Collins Square development at 727 Collins Street in Melbourne’s CBD.

The building comprising a 38 storey office tower and marks the second building Multiplex has constructed in the development, having also completed the $205 million 25 level Tower One in 2013.

Collins Square is a $2.5 billion development consisting of five inter-connected commercial office towers providing a combined total of 185,000 square metres net lettable area over a whole city block. It is expected to be completed in mid-2018.

The towers connect via an integrated podium three levels above ground. Located in close proximity to Southern Cross Station, tram lines and the Docklands precinct, Collins Square has also included the restoration of the historic Goods Shed South.

This project responds to the demand for brand new Premium-Grade commercial space in Melbourne CBD and its design continues the laneway character of the surrounding streetscapes,” said Mr Graham Cottam, Regional Managing Director of Victoria at Multiplex.

“Our team applied its extensive experience in delivering complex high rise towers in the CBD environment to this project,” said Mr Cottam.

Some 620 people worked on-site during the construction of Tower Two and the majority of construction was undertaken recognising the need to minimise the impact to both commercial and retail tenants located in the adjacent Towers.

Complexities involved with construction included laying a cantilevered 2.4 metre slab at level 26 and an interconnecting main lobby.

Construction saw 39,500 cubic metres of concrete poured, as well as 3,800 tonnes of reinforcement and 518 tonnes of post-tensioned concrete. The curtain wall design façade was constructed using 38,000 square metres of high performance low-e glass.

The development is environmentally sustainable and has received a 5 Star Green Star Design and is targeting an As Built v3 Rating as well as a NABERS Energy 5 Star rating.

Multiplex is also currently constructing Tower Four of the Collins Square development, a $180 million 21-level mixed-use tower comprising large open floor plates, an internal atrium housing the largest internal green wall in the southern hemisphere and a six level car park providing just over 200 car spaces. Tower Four is scheduled for completion in August, 2016.
