Multiplex launches new Ethical Labour Management System

Modern slavery is a major problem around the world and it is directly influencing the UK construction Industry. Our new Ethical Labour Management System is part of our work towards a 'Responsible Supply Chain free from Modern Slavery', one of the five pillars of our Net Positive strategy. It formalises a number of improvements we are making to our working practices to combat labour exploitation and increase worker welfare.

These improvements include:

• A new Ethical Labour and Modern Slavery Policy Statement and Ethical Labour Principles
• Enhanced subcontractor due diligence measures
• Clearer contractual requirements for our subcontractors, including a requirement to provide evidence of training on tackling modern slavery
• All Multiplex site inductions now include a standardised section on workers' rights
• Roll out of grievance mechanisms through which workers can seek help and support
• Worker interviews where team members can provide anonymous information about how they are being treated, supported by enhanced subcontractor auditing and training

The Ethical Labour Management System builds on the industry-leading work we are already doing to combat modern slavery in the construction industry, working closely with industry groups to drive increased collaboration, shared resources and concerted action:

• Multiplex is a founding member of anti-slavery alliance Stronger Together's construction working group
• We have joined the UK Government's Construction Protocol  which is a programme of the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA).
• Multiplex is also a founding member of Building Responsibly, where we have been working with Fluor to draft industry Principles in the field of workers' rights and welfare; promoting best practice in ten key areas, with feedback and endorsement from key stakeholders including the International Labour Organisation, IOSH, Humanity United and Engineers Against Poverty.
