Multiplex started construction on the former cargo and passenger wharves 9 and 10 at the southern end of Darling Harbour in 1999. The billion-dollar King Street Wharf complex is a mixed-use tourism, commercial, residential and maritime development situated on the western edge of Sydney’s Central Business District. It was opened in 2001.
Multiplex was responsible for the residential and commercial Stages 1, 2, and 3, the purpose designed and built offices for KPMG and American Express, and the fit-out of Xerts restaurant. They also delivered associated infrastructure such as roadworks, car parking, charter vessel berthing facilities and coach parking.
The five-hectare precinct comprises of a selection of fine dining restaurants and commercial areas that front the water with additional commercial space and residential accommodation located behind. Significantly, the King Street Wharf development has also restored public access to Barangaroo for the first time in a century.
In 2003 ferry, charter and cruise ship services moved to King Street Wharf. This completed the transformation of the historic wharves into a sophisticated waterside venue just minutes’ walk to the Sydney CBD.
