Final Structural Beam hoisted at Kitchener’s Indoor Recreation Complex
TORONTO, CANADA: The final fieldhouse beam has officially been raised at Kitchener’s indoor recreation complex, marking a milestone for this much-anticipated development.
Multiplex proudly joined the City of Kitchener, Provincial officials, City Council and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) partners to celebrate this moment with a ceremonial beam signing before it was hoisted into place. This symbolic moment reflected the progress and collaboration of the many hands driving this project forward.
In construction, the final beam placed at the highest point of a building's structure is often referred to as the topping out beam. This placement marks a significant milestone in the building's construction, signifying the completion of the structural framework.
“Today marks an important milestone for Kitchener’s indoor recreation complex - a future hub for community, activity and belonging,” said Multiplex Project Director Atiaan Stander “Raising the final beam, four weeks ahead of schedule, reflects not only the hard work of our teams but the strength of collaboration that’s been central to this project from day one.”
Crowned with a symbolic tree and the flags of Walters Group, Union Ironworkers Local 736 Canada, and Multiplex, the final beam was lifted approximately 17 meters above the fieldhouse structure at RBJ Schlegel Park, marking the completion of the project’s steel framework.
Through the Integrated Project Delivery model and LEAN construction principles, the team has made smart, efficient progress keeping the facility on track for completion in late summer 2026.
One year after breaking ground, the event also coincided with a significant funding announcement from the Province of Ontario. The City of Kitchener will receive $10 million through Ontario’s Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund to support the addition of a new multi-purpose quad gymnasium within the complex.
“We are thrilled to announce the provincial government's generous support toward building the new quad-gymnasium,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “This first-of-its-kind facility will not only serve as a hub for sports and recreation - it’s also expected to attract major tournaments that bring new energy and dollars into our local economy.”
Once complete, the 222,000-square-foot facility will provide inclusive, modern spaces for residents of all ages and abilities. Amenities will include an aquatic centre with lap and leisure pools, a four-turf field house, two cricket practice nets, an elevated walking track, multipurpose rooms, and the new quad gymnasium.
With its innovative design and inclusive features, Kitchener’s newest recreation hub will set the standard for modern recreation facilities, bringing people together for sports, fitness, and community-building.
