The purpose-built Stadium Australia was designed to seat 110,000 spectators during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and was completed three months prior to the contract.

Multiplex engineered the stadium to comply with sustainable design principles, including the reduced use of steel materials in the roof structure in comparison to other Olympic stadiums.

Stadium Australia required extensive community and stakeholder management, high levels of local industry participation and careful planning.

After the Olympics, using technology not previously applied at an Australian sporting venue, the Stadium’s seating arrangements were reconfigured to accommodate different shaped sporting grounds and providing 80,000 seats. These reconfiguration works, completed by Multiplex also, transformed the Stadium into a true multi-purpose arena.

Stadium Australia has won over 15 major engineering and construction awards over the years, including the prestigious British Construction Industry Award and the Australian Construction Achievement Award 2000.
