LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM. Multiplex, the global construction contractor, has today launched its annual Environmental Social Governance (ESG) Report for Europe. The report details the actions taken to create positive impacts through the projects delivered across the UK, as well as the achievements and advances made throughout 2021.

Multiplex has been at the front end of ESG conversations and actions for many years. Having contributed evidence to advance the business and wider industry, the company has implemented exemplar initiatives that continue to have a positive and material impact.

Commenting on the report Callum Tuckett, Multiplex’s UK Managing Director, said:

“At Multiplex our purpose is to construct a better future and we pride ourselves on working with partners who value our long-standing commitment to ESG. Our values are rooted in our DNA to outperform through way we work and how we build, to the impact we have on the communities that we operate in and the wider built environment… As we continue on our ESG journey, aligning our efforts through a global ESG strategy which has helped shape this report, I am proud to share the progress and achievements we have reached so far.”

As the construction company behind some of the UK’s largest and most complex projects – including 22 Bishopsgate (the City of London’s tallest tower), The Broadway (one of the largest high-end residential schemes in London) the redevelopment of Elephant & Castle (one of Central London’s largest regeneration projects), 80 Charlotte Street (Multiplex’s first net zero building), and the University of Glasgow’s campus redevelopment – Multiplex’s approach is based on using its market position and influence to inspire behavioural change within and beyond its own business, collaborating closely with its clients and supply chain to lead coordinated action.

Some of our highlights from 2021 include:

  • Environment:

In 2021, Multiplex achieved a 45% reduction in scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions compared to its 2017 base year, meaning the company is close to maintaining the scope 1 and 2 science based target. The contractor aims to continue minimising energy use across sites and switch to green gas or use biofuels from waste where these are not currently used.

  • Net Positive Biodiversity, Air Quality and Water:

All Multiplex projects are audited by enforcing authorities against the Greater London Authority (GLA), Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM), and Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) requirements. Multiplex has been able to sustain its 100% compliance record against these requirements throughout 2021 and had zero reportable environmental incidents.

  • Responsible & Circular Resourcing:

By using materials with a high recycled content, Multiplex has been able to promote material circularity and increase the demand for a circular economy. In 2021, 99.9% of construction waste was diverted from landfill, 99% of our top 10 materials were responsibly sourced and the company received a Platinum Award in the supply chain sustainability assessment, EcoVadis.

  • Building in Sustainability:

100% of sustainability assessments (e.g. BREEAM) targeted in 2021 were achieved and Multiplex is on track to deliver a further 18 sustainability assessments across its live portfolio of projects due to complete in 2022 and beyond.

  • Health, Safety and Wellbeing:

Multiplex was awarded a ROSPA commendation for the One Life. One Team. Programme for excellence in Health and Safety at work. A dedicated wellbeing committee was also introduced.

  • Socio-Economic Value:

In 2021 the company facilitated a number of collaborative workshops and consultation sessions with supply chain partners to share knowledge, experience and discuss overall approaches to ESG.

  • Diversity, Inclusion and Respect:

Multiplex Flex launched across all sites and the 2021 graduate intake was 40% female, with 30% from an ethnically diverse background.

  • Our People:

Multiplex is committed to providing a culture where health and wellbeing share equal status with physical safety. In 2021, 142 people were trained as Mental Health First Aiders within Multiplex.
