Redefining recreation through innovation, inclusivity, and net-zero carbon leadership in Kitchener

The Cowan Recreation Centre will be a transformative 227,000 sq. ft. facility located within the RBJ Schlegel Park, delivered through Integrated Project Delivery model. This project will reflect the City of Kitchener’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community well-being.

Envisioned as a vibrant community hub for active living, the complex will offer a wide range of amenities including a community and tournament-sized indoor turf fieldhouse, an indoor aquatic centre featuring a warm water leisure pool and an 8-lane competition pool, spacious viewing galleries, elevated walking track overlooking the turf field, dedicated cricket batting cage, and flexible multipurpose rooms for events and rentals.

A 30,000 square feet quad gymnasium with glazed flooring will include four configurable sport courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and pickleball. A mezzanine with fixed seating and a cricket pitch will enhance the spectator experience. As the city’s first net-zero carbon building, the facility will be constructed using steel and Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), and will incorporate a high-performance envelope, geothermal heating and cooling, and a rooftop solar PV array to support its net-zero carbon goals. Guided by LEAN construction principles and Integrated Project Delivery, the project will emphasize collaboration, resource efficiency, and timely decision-making. This landmark facility will set a new benchmark for sustainable recreation in Canada, bringing people together to connect, play, and thrive.
